Review Overview – What does Cellucor C4 do?
First launching in 2010, Cellucor C4 has become one of the most well known Pre-Workout products in the world.
But what is it that has made this product so popular? Is it how it makes you feel in the gym? Partly, but the placebo effect can be a powerful thing, and we need to be more thorough than that.
Let’s start by seeing what C4 claims to do:
On Cellucor’s website, C4 is said to:
- Increase Energy – Workout for longer
- Intensify Focus – Get those extra reps you usually couldn’t
- Enhance Muscle Pumps – Increase blood flow and muscle size
It seems impressive. But these claims are not backed by the FDA – the only way we’ll know if C4 is the real deal is by analyzing Cellucor, and C4’s ingredients.
How does Cellucor C4 work?
In terms of dosages C4 is recommended to be taken in 1 scoop servings 20-30 minutes before a workout. If you’re tolerance increases, you can up the dosage – however 2 scoops of this product is the absolute limit.
Cellucor C4 has become an effective pre-workout in the industry through a combination of ingredients that has brought solid workouts to gym-goers everywhere. Ourselves included.
But how exactly did their nutrient profile accomplish this?
The Soft Stuff
These are the ingredients that play a supporting role to the pre-workout. They’re usually a collection of vitamins and minerals that protect the body and give a mild boost of energy to keep it stable while using the pre-workout.
There’s not really much to note here except the large collection of Vitamin Bs in this product.
These will help regulate the energy in the body, and will also promote fat loss.
The Vitamin C on the other hand will work more towards cell protection, and support the blood vessels.
The Hard Stuff
These are the ingredients that really make a difference. They typically come in a range of amino acids and stimulants and make all the difference to your session.
Let’s take a look:
Beta Alanine (1.6g)
This amino acid is great for muscle strength and endurance. Usually found in beef and pork – it has been seen to increase lifting volume and overall stamina while reducing levels of fatigue.
It can cause a tingling sensation known as paresthesia – however this is completely harmless and a sign that the pre-workout is taking effect.
Creatine Nitrate (1g)
A an amino acid found in meats which can increase explosive power in users via a dramatic increase of water retention in the muscles. It has been seen in countless studies to increase muscle strength and endurance in subjects.
Arginine AKG (1g)
Arginine is known for it’s ability to release nitric oxide in the body. This is incredibly effective as it helps with the dilation of blood vessels and circulation, which greatly increases the pump in the gym.
Explosive Energy Blend (371mg) – This is a proprietary blend. Unfortunately this means that we are unable to know how much of each ingredient is included in this product that makes up part of the blend.
N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine (?mg)
Affecting dopamine and noradreanline in the body – it has been seen to reduce stress and to boost cognition. This is valuable for maintaining focus when taking other ingredients such as stimulants which can cause jiters.
Caffeine Anhydrous (?mg)
Caffeine is a brilliant stimulant and increases power output and muscle endurance by how it stimulates the brain and promotes wakefulness in the body. It is also good for burning fat as caffeine anhydrous can also raise metabolism and energy levels.
Mucuna Pruriens (?mg)
With a wide range of benefits, Mucuna Pruriens is a great choice for a pre-workout as the L-Dopa within it can raise adrenaline levels in the body. As an added bonus Mucuna Pruriens have been linked to increasing testosterone.
Tetramethyluric (?mg)
An alkaloid that is very structurally similar to caffeine. Working with similar signalling pathways, Tetramethyluric provides the same stimulating effects. There has been research that argues Tetramethyluric (Theacrine) may have less tolerance than caffeine. However more research is needed.

Are there any side effects?
Tingling Skin
A common one with products that contain beta-alanine. This is known as paresthesia and is nothing to worry about.
Headaches and Nausea
This can be caused by a high stimulant content. The proprietary blend isn’t that large so this shouldn’t be a problem but it has been reported to those with a weaker tolerance.
Intense Focus
Also known as tunnel vision. This usually happens when there are potent cognitive enhancers in the mix. It shouldn’t be a problem in this product, however with the proprietary blend angle it’s hard to rule out. We didn’t experience any problems.

Is this the best out there?
We believe so. According to our research on proven pre-workout ingredients and the reputation of the product. We have yet to see anything else that can top C4.
