Review Overview – What does ENGN do?
From the folks at EVLUTION NUTRITION, ENGN their pre-workout, is one that claims to:
- Boost Energy
- Increase Pump
- Enhance Focus
But does it really?
We’ve been taking a closer look at ENGN, along with the cold hard facts these claims are based on, and we’re pretty surprised with the results.
Here’s what you need to know about this supplement from a science point of view.
Can I double scoop it?
We don’t advise it.
EVLUTION NUTRITION only recommend one scoop of ENGN and we have to agree. They don’t disclose the amount of all the ingredient in this product, so if you decide to double-up, you could end up with some side effects.
What about the Ingredients in ENGN?
Hit and miss unfortunately.
Don’t get us wrong, there were some good choices in ENGN. The only problem is that a lot of them were under a proprietary blend.
Why is that a problem?
Proprietary Blends are a group of ingredients rolled together into one. The end result being there’s only one dosage for all of them, so we know what’s in it – just not how much.
This is crucial information being withheld and it can make all the difference between a pre-workout being good, or awful.
We’ve written up the more notable ingredients, here’s what we found:
Beta-Alanine is a good thought… but it’s under-dosed in this instance…
BA is a great pre-workout ingredient. It’s good for buffering the acid in your muscles so you can go the distance when training.
However, studies have shown the effects only have an impact in the 2 – 6g mark, which is more than what’s in ENGN. You’re definitely not going to get the full benefit here.
The Creatine Complex should be okay though…
Creatine’s a good one, and helps with water retention in your muscles. This increases your overall power output and aids muscle size.
However, it works a lot better if you’re taking it on a daily basis.
This means we don’t know how much we’re getting of each… or how effective they’ll be…WARNING: The rest of the ingredients in ENGN are part of a PROPRIETARY BLEND.
The Betaine is shaky ground in this mix…
One of the components in beetroot. Studies have shown betaine may help fight fatigue, increase power output and enhance overall endurance. However, you need at least 500mg per serving to benefit from the effects.
And as this is in a proprietary blend. We think this is highly unlikely.
And the Choline Bitartrate isn’t strictly a pre-workout…
Found mainly in egg yolk, and used mainly as a nootropic – not a pre-workout.
This compound has been seen to raise cognitive function in some cases. The problem here being that the dose has to be pretty high to achieve it. Most studies recommend around 1 – 2g for the full effects.
Again, in a proprietary blend. It’s not going to happen.
L-Tyrosine only has minor effects…
This isn’t really a pre-workout ingredient – it’s more damage control.
L-Tyrosine is an amino acid that helps lower stress levels and relaxation. Which suggests the caffeine dosage in this product may be too much.
The Caffeine may help… or hinder, depending on this blend…
One of the best natural stimulants out there, caffeine is great for boosting energy and power output.
However, as this is a proprietary blend, we’re not sure how much we’re getting which could lead to problems if its overdosed.
Alpha-GPC & Huperzine A have some positives, but they’re not going to pump you up…
Again, these are nootropic ingredients, which mainly promote focus. However again, these are required in large quantities to make much of an impact.
Ingredients Bottom Line
As you can see, ENGN’s main downfall was the overuse of proprietary blends in the product. All the ingredients that mattered had their dosages hidden and made it hard to see how effective it was.
However it’s pretty clear to us that this seems like a move by EVLUTION NUTRITION to get away with under-dosing their product and saving money on their budget.
And for that reason we don’t recommend ENGN.
If you want to know what you should be looking for in a pre-workout, be sure to check out the our top recommendations in the list below:
– Top Pre-Workout Ingredients –
Are there any side effects?
Your main concern is the caffeine.
As we don’t know the exact dosage here, there could be too much, and that could lead to:
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Raised Blood Pressure
- Jitters
If you know you’re sensitive to caffeine, be careful with ENGN.
Is there anything better out there?
Yes,
The main thing that EVLUTION need to sort out is that proprietary blend, and work backwards from there.
As for alternatives, there are only a handful of pre-workouts that:
- Increase Energy
- Improve Power Output
- Boost Pumps
- Enhance Focus
Both safely and effectively. We’ve narrowed it down to 3, take a look in the link below.

EVLUTION NUTRITION ENGN Review Conclusion
Overall, this is far from the best pre-workout we’ve seen on the market and there are a couple of reasons why it’s fallen short of the mark:
- Proprietary Blend – Unable to learn dosages of some ingredients
- Under-Dosed in places – Insufficient amounts in nutrient profile
- Potential Side Effects – Might be too much caffeine
On the whole it’s not a safe bet. If you’re in the market for a pre-workout, it’s worth checking out what we’re currently using below:
